Over the holiday I was confronted by a doctor who told me that he is “strongly against marketing”.

The conversation that I’m about to share with you will help you understand why Network Marketing is the most important profession in the world and why ignorance can even exist among the highly educated.

“I think marketing should be banned unless it’s just information”, said the doctor. “Marketers just try to manipulate people when what we really want is information to make a decision.”
“Are you kidding me?” I asked with an appalling look on my face.

“No. I really believe that. I don’t mean to offend you, but I think your profession is immoral.”, he said.

“You don’t offend me.” I replied. “You offend your wife.” He raised one eyebrow.
I continued, “You must have mastered marketing to get her on a date and eventually get her to marry you… no offense to you, of course.”

“That’s different”, he laughed nervously. “It’s OK to market ideas, just not products that we don’t need.”

“Which products do you mean? People never used deodorant until marketers created demand for it. Would you say you need deodorant? You don’t need orange juice in Boston in the winter but marketers create enough demand that its possible for you to get it at a reasonable price.”

“I’m talking about the bad stuff.”, he said.

“Oh, you mean doctors who sell tests to patients when they really don’t need them?” I dug a little too close to home.

“That’s an opinion of a trained professional, it has nothing to do with what I’m talking about”.

“I have to disagree. It has everything to do with what you’re talking about. You market your services just like I market my products. Eighty percent of all business is done through word-of-mouth. If a product or service doesn’t get good word of mouth, it will ultimately fail. People recommend a doctor just like they recommend a nutritional supplement, a good book, a website or a movie. That’s the most important element of marketing.”
“I doubt it’s 80%.” He said.

“That’s because you’re a doctor and you’ve never studied marketing. How would you know?” I replied. “Marketing is the most important profession in the world. It’ makes commerce profitable. That commerce includes the hospital you work for and the check you receive every month. Without marketing you may not have ever become a doctor, nor would you be paid what you earn now.”

I continued, “Every necessity you have and every luxury you enjoy is made possible by marketers. It used to be manufacturing and distribution that reduced costs but that was before we were born. Now it’s marketing that makes the difference. Marketers do the research to find out what people want and then deliver a product that fits at a reasonable price.”

“What about that company that got shut down last year for operating an illegal pyramid scheme.” He thought he cornered me.

“There is bad marketing out there. Just like there are bad doctors. But that doesn’t mean the profession is bad. One of the biggest challenges I face is ignorance. People think they know what network marketing is but they really have no idea. I’ve been in marketing for 20 years and I know that I don’t anything significant about surgery. Nor do I pretend to. But people who’ve never studied marketing, think ‘marketers just try to manipulate people’. “

“Well… I just don’t like spam and billboards and junk mail. It’s a waste of my time and a waste of their money.”

“I agree.”

“You do?” he asked

“Sure. It’s your opinion about what you like and don’t like. How can you be wrong?”

“Exactly.” He replied thinking he won me over.

“That’s marketing”, I said. “Finding what the customer wants and giving it to him at the best possible price.”

“Well I still don’t like marketers”. He turned to leave.

“That’s OK. Marketers still like you.” I smiled and he left.

It’s not my proudest moment nor my best job educating someone about Network Marketing, but except for my digs to the doctor, it was an enlightening conversation that shows you that even the educated can be ignorant.
Let me summarize the conversation for you:

1. Marketing makes it possible for you to get the necessities of life at a reasonable price
2. Marketing makes it possible for you to enjoy the luxuries of life at a reasonable price
3. You can have immoral marketing but that doesn’t make marketing immoral.
4. Education doesn’t make someone immune to ignorance.
5. Marketing is the engine of the economy.
6. The economy significantly affects our lives.
7. Marketing is the most important profession in the world.

You can be incredibly proud to be in marketing. It’s the profession that makes all other professions possible. And it’s the profession that makes life’s necessities and luxuries affordable.

Congratulations for being a part of such an honorable profession and for helping us bring GeneWize’s life-changing products to the world.
